SLHS will be participating for the first time in the UCONN Gives campaign taking place beginning March 27-28, 2019. For 36 hours, all of UConn Nation will be coming together to support the university we love.

During those 36 hours, we will be raising money for the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences in honor of Dr. Mark Ross. Everyone has a mentor that they hold in high regard.  For me, Dr. Mark Ross, is the epitome of what a leader in the field of audiology should be.  He influenced my practice and research with everything from the WIPI to thoughts on earmolds, hearing aid fittings and the value of patient centered support groups.  There is not an area of rehabilitative audiology in which Mark has not been involved.

The department would like to honor Dr. Ross and all his accomplishments by setting up a fund that can be used in support of students in the Au.D. program.  Mark has touched so many of us in the field, we would like to acknowledge his valuable contribution in this way.

Dr. Alison Marinelli successfully defended her doctoral dissertation  titled “A qualitative examination of the listening effort experience of adults with hearing loss.”  Ali presented the results of her work at the recent Hearing Rehabilitation Foundation (HRF) conference in St. Petersburg, FL.  Congratulations Ali on an outstanding piece of work!

Dr. Kristin Vasil-Dilaj (AR Lab Research Affiliate and audiologist at NECHEAR) and her colleague Dr. Jennifer Cox  offer thoughtful commentary on hearing aids versus cochlear implants for older children in the latest issue of the ASHA Leader.

Shannon Wannagot (Au.D./Ph.D student) had her first paper published based on work completed as a T-35 trainee at Boystown National Research Hospital. The worked titled “Effects of Looking Behavior on Listening and Understanding in a Simulated Classroom” can be found in the most recent issue of Journal of Educational Audiology, volume 20, 1-10. Congratulations Shannon!

After many years in Philips 138 the Aural Rehab lab will have a new home.  We will be moving into newly renovated space in Philips building sometime in January.  Exciting changes are underway and we are looking forward to our new location.

The ARA Institute is fast approaching.  The UCONN AR Lab will be well represented with presentations by Brittney Dullard, Michael Kurth, Ali Marinelli, Tracie Tuss and Shannon Wannagot.  Hope to see you in Philly (9/7 – 9/9).
